I always loved making things as a young child, but didn't have time for art in high school. While attending Auburn I took art and design classes along with Physical Education courses. The art and design classes didn't come into play during my teaching career until I moved to Florida and began teaching at a small rural elementary school. I loved seeing the results when art skills were shared and students were given a challenging prompt. Next, I moved to a high achieving high school where I was honored to teach students from all walks of life as I began the computer art program. Eventually, in addition to my beginning classes, I also taught Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate students.

 

While in Florida, I was honored as a Teacher of the Year at my school and a Finalist for the County honor. I was also recognized by the state art association as first the Elementary and then the High School Art Teacher of the Year. I also served on the state board and helped write the computer art standards for the state of Florida. Additionally, I was selected to represent the United States as a Fulbright Teacher on trips to the Australia and Japan. I was also selected for teacher seminars abroad to Korea, China, the Netherlands, England, and Turkey. I left the high school to attend graduate school where I earned a Doctorate of Philosophy in Art Education. I moved to South Carolina to be near family. After teaching for forty years, my last six in Charleston, I retired. Luckily for me, I was selected for a studio space at Redux Contemporary Art Center where I find joy every time I pick up my paint brush.
